Virginia, in Roman legend, was the daughter of the centurion Virginius. Her father killed her to save her from the unwanted lust of Appius Claudius Crassus, a decemvir ( one of ten men appointed to codify Roman law).  Legend says that the Roman citizens were so outraged at the death of such a beautiful, innocent young woman that a revolt ensued in which Crassus was killed and which ultimately led to the fall of the decemvirs.

Cast from Carrara marble in Borgo san Giacomo, Italy.
